Artist's Statement About The Work

Last Rally At Wooldridge Park.

The painting is a large oil painting on canvas. The subject is the 100 year old Wooldridge Park Bandstand
and Park in Austin, Texas, where many an old timey political rally was staged. Across the street is the old
Austin Public Library. And across another street is the old Austin Courthouse.

I started the painting in 2008 as the Presidential elections were really getting ugly. I actually
thought that this could be the last election as we know the current process. I was projecting way
into the future what the park would look like after the very, very last political rally, late at night after everyone
has gone home. That is an old "moonlight" tower in the background. Another one lights the Bandstand.

As a child I spent many fine days, and nights, playing in that old wonderful park. We loved to play "Capture
The Flag". Perhaps that same game is what the adults were playing in the 2008 election.

Production Notes: I visited the site in 2008 to take photographs. The park was exactly
as I remembered it. The bandstand has been refurbished and repainted. It was a gray day and the
photographs are just great. The old Library is now The Austin Historical Building. I have learned
that there is a great archive of everything from Austin's early days to now. I even found files of the old
missing First Baptist Church photos and documents... but that's another story... and another painting?
